Dr. Calahan is proud to have been born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. After 13 years of pursuing his education, he is excited to rejoin the community to raise his family and provide high-quality periodontal care.
Dr. Calahan graduated from Caddo Magnet High School in 2004. He then enrolled at Louisiana Tech University where he graduated cum laude with a degree in biology and chemistry in 2008. He received his Doctorate in Dental Surgery in 2014 from the Louisiana State University – School of Dentistry in New Orleans where he graduated with honors.
While attending dental school, Dr. Calahan found a passion for the finesse of periodontal surgery and the pursuit of maintaining a patient’s natural teeth. These interests led him to his 3-year Periodontics Residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio. The residency in San Antonio provided rigorous training under the mentorship of many Air Force Colonels who had previously served at Barksdale Air Force Base before retiring as faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio and Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base.
While training in his residency, Dr. Calahan pursued research interests involving bone grafting techniques to retain the dimension of the jaw bones to facilitate ideal implant placement to replace missing teeth. His research has been published in the Journal of Periodontology and earned him the prestigious Prichard Prize for Clinical Research in 2017 by the Southwest Society of Periodontists.
Dr. Calahan’s focus in his practice is the management of periodontal disease to facilitate the maintenance of his patient’s natural teeth for the remainder of their lives. When reality prevents this, Dr. Calahan is trained in advanced bone and gingival grafting techniques to enable the replacement of the missing teeth with dental implants or other prosthetic solutions. Dr. Calahan also has a keen interest in the treatment of gum recession and gummy smiles to create ideal esthetics using minimally invasive techniques.
Dr. Calahan is blessed to have married his high school sweetheart, Destiny, whom he met on the soccer field at Caddo Magnet. They are the proud parents of two-year-old Gemma and a second child on the way. Dr. Calahan enjoys being a husband and father, staying fit, and spending time in God’s humbling wilderness.
